Few bonds are as strong and lasting as those between humans and their pets.
This is especially true with small pets. For while they are tinier than our cats and dogs, their hearts seem just as big. Anyone who has seen the excitement in their furry companion when it is time to eat or play will tell you that these special pets deserve every bit of love, attention and healthy nutrition that they can be given.

Guinea Pig

Guinea pigs are snugglers. Their cute faces, soft coats and gentle dispositions make them ideal pets. They become very connected to their owners and will squeak and chirp when you come into the room for some love. Guinea pigs live a long life and want to spend most of it snuggled up with you. They are easy to care for, but their habitat must be large and have lots of room for their house where they sleep and their two bowls. It is important that Guinea Pigs receive some fresh vegetables such as broccoli, romaine lettuce or carrots each day, in addition to their hay and everyday diet. Guinea pigs are easy to feed, but it is important to feed a blended diet with a balanced blend of timothy and alfalfa hay pellets or extruded kibbles along with some functional aspects such as stabilized vitamin C, a urinary tract acidifier to prevent urinary tract stones and considerations for a healthy digestive tract, soft coat and dental health. Guinea Pigs eat a wide variety of foods, but feed them more of the functional diet and give them dessert with their daily salad. Super diets also contain the fruits, vegetables and grains that they prefer. Although few like to run on a wheel, they do enjoy some time on the floor with their owner, safe from stairs, dogs, cats and other dangers. When you have a guinea pig, you have a dedicated pet who will look forward to seeing you as much as you look forward to seeing them.

Hamster and Gerbil

Hamsters are irresistibly cute. Their soft coats and little hands have made them a favourite pet for generations. Hamsters prefer a solitary life, and maybe this is why they love their people so much. Being nocturnal, you sometimes need to speak softly to them to wake up and play, but once up, they are up for everything, from fun exercise balls to cool mazes and sometimes just some one-on-one time. They are easy to care for but need a diet that supports their digestive system, dental health and coat. Most importantly, hamsters prefer large seeds, grains, pellets and nuts as they “pouch” their food and transport it to their hiding spots. You will see that your hammy will build a new world for himself or herself every time you clean their habitat. New hiding spots and a new nest are part of what makes them fascinating, on top of being irresistibly cute. Gerbils are nonstop action and hilarious. Their cute face and big feet, added to their active disposition, make them a favourite of boys. Girls do love them as well, but boys love their athletic gerbils. Gerbils prefer to live with other gerbils, and it is best to keep girls with girls or boys with boys or you will have a little gerbil family. One remarkable fact is that gerbils produce little waste. Originally a desert rodent, they evolved to a point where they can optimize their food and water. Gerbils will also hoard or hide food in their habitat and prefer a wide range of larger seeds, grains, pellets and nuts. It is important to buy a cage with little to no plastic for gerbils, as they are aggressive chewers on their habitat. Provide lots of safe wood chews and paper towel tubes for them to chew on. Like hamsters, gerbils love the exercise wheel and the exercise ball, being the athletes they are; they will surprise you with their speed and their love for fun!

Rabbit

Rabbits are cuddlers. They love to cuddle and have a nice long pet. Who can resist the adorable long ears and soft coat of a bunny? Rabbits are quiet and gentle pets, and they might be the most fun to have out of the habitat playing for a while. It is important to be sure there are no dangers such as stairs, dogs, cats and dangerous items bunnies can chew such as cords. Their hop-hop-step add to their cuteness along with their busy nose. They are easy to care for, but their habitat must be large and have lots of room for their house where they sleep and their two bowls. They are easy to feed, but it is important to feed a blended diet with a balanced formula of timothy and alfalfa hay pellets or extruded kibbles, along with some functional aspects such as a urinary tract acidifier to prevent urinary tract stones and considerations for a healthy digestive tract, soft coat and dental health. Additionally, Rabbits like Guinea Pigs require and enjoy timothy and alfalfa hay everyday. Rabbits also need hairball relief and odour control built into their pelleted or kibble diet. Rabbits groom themselves like cats and ingest hair. Good diets contain natural ingredients that breakdown the hairballs forming in the stomach and make the hair easy to pass. Super diets also contain the fruits, vegetables and grains that they prefer. Don’t be surprised when your bunny falls asleep in your lap; they simply trust you and feel secure, and the petting soothes them to sleep.

Rat and Mouse

Rats love their people. No rodent will sit on your shoulder or on your lap longer than a rat. Often overlooked due to their naked tail and beady eyes, rats are becoming more and more popular as people discover how gentle, clean and loving they are. Rats are inquisitive and interesting. They keep their habitat very clean and are often up all day and sleep at night. They are very enthusiastic about coming out for play and a snuggle too. Rats are easy to care for and enjoy a diet of pellets, fruits, vegetables, grains and seeds. Ideally, provide a diet with extra considerations for digestive health, dental health and soft coat. Rats, like hamsters, will hoard food and eat a wide variety of foods. Like guinea pigs, rats become very attached to their people and will meet you at their door for some one-on-one time. Who can resist that whiskered face and the little hand reaching out for you? Mice are interesting and spend most of their day tunneling and building their environment. With enough bedding you will see deep and complicated tunnels building each week. Mice do prefer to live with other mice, but it is important to keep girls with girls and boys with boys, or you will have a mouse family to care for. Mice eat a wide variety of foods but it is most important to feed a good diet with Yucca Extract to reduce cage odour. Ideally, use a premium bedding to absorb liquid waste quickly. Mice love the exercise wheel and will entertain you for hours as they all try to run on one wheel together – sometimes not even in the same direction! Hilarious and interesting, for sure.
