Hamsters are irresistibly cute. Their soft coats and little hands have made them a favourite pet for generations. Hamsters prefer a solitary life, and maybe this is why they love their people so much. Being nocturnal, you sometimes need to speak softly to them to wake up and play, but once up, they are up for everything, from fun exercise balls to cool mazes and sometimes just some one-on-one time. They are easy to care for but need a diet that supports their digestive system, dental health and coat. Most importantly, hamsters prefer large seeds, grains, pellets and nuts as they “pouch” their food and transport it to their hiding spots. You will see that your hammy will build a new world for himself or herself every time you clean their habitat. New hiding spots and a new nest are part of what makes them fascinating, on top of being irresistibly cute. Gerbils are nonstop action and hilarious. Their cute face and big feet, added to their active disposition, make them a favourite of boys. Girls do love them as well, but boys love their athletic gerbils. Gerbils prefer to live with other gerbils, and it is best to keep girls with girls or boys with boys or you will have a little gerbil family. One remarkable fact is that gerbils produce little waste. Originally a desert rodent, they evolved to a point where they can optimize their food and water. Gerbils will also hoard or hide food in their habitat and prefer a wide range of larger seeds, grains, pellets and nuts. It is important to buy a cage with little to no plastic for gerbils, as they are aggressive chewers on their habitat. Provide lots of safe wood chews and paper towel tubes for them to chew on. Like hamsters, gerbils love the exercise wheel and the exercise ball, being the athletes they are; they will surprise you with their speed and their love for fun!
